Description:  This volume of work on Autism addresses the significance of imitation as a social skill and how it has contributed to the evolution of the disorder in a developmental context.  Neuropsychological concepts are discussed to provide a foundation so that providers and researchers can understand the key issues and nature of autism. The book is organized into three parts: It first provides background knowledge for the reader about imitation in typical development, and follows this introduction with neuroscience research findings. Infant imitation research, findings, and methodological problems are reviewed, as well as theories and evidence about the role of imitation in social-communicative development. Finally, the book addresses research findings on imitation in autism, their clinical implications, and future directions for research in this area.

Objectives:  Upon completion of this book-based course, the participant will be able to: 1)  Define key concepts, such as imitation and mimicry, and how they are relevant to understanding language, socioemotional development, and autism. 2)  Summarize important research findings regarding imitation and development and the differences between typical infants/children and those with autism. 3)   Identify key areas of deficits and impairments that distinguish children with autism from typically developing individuals. 4)  Summarize research findings regarding underlying neurological mechanisms that may explain the impairments found in children with autism. 5)  Identify methodological problems with this area of research and future directions.

Content areas covered include:1). Studies of Imitation in Early Infancy: Findings and Theories; 2). Vocal and Action Imitation by Infants and Toddlers during Dyadic Interactions: Development, Causes, and Consequences; 3) Instrumental, Social, and Shared Goals and Intentions in Imitation; 4) Mimicry and Autism: Bases and Consequences of Rapid, Automatic Matching Behavior; 5) Imitation and the Development of Language; 6) Does Imitation Matter to Children with Autism?; 7) Imitation and Self-Recognition in Autism: In Search of an Explanation; 8) Imitation, Theory of Mind, and Cultural Knowledge: Perspectives from Typical Development and Autism; 9) Imitation, Identification, and the Shaping of Mind: Insights from Autism; 10) The Dissection of Imitation and its “Cognitive Kin” in Comparative and Developmental Psychology; 11) A Cognitive Neuroscience View of Imitation; 12) Imitation in Autism: Findings and Controversies; 13) Longitudinal Research on Motor Imitation in Autism; 14) Measuring the Development of Motor-Control Processes in Neurodevelopmental Disorders; 15) Neuroimaging Self-Other Mapping in Autism; 16) Assessment of Imitation Abilities in Autism: Conceptual and Methodological Issues; 17) The Effect of Motor Disorders on Imitation in Children.
